Adoption at a glance

The purpose of an adoption is to es-tablish a legal parent-child relationship between the adoptive parents and the child regardless of biological descent.

Depending on the presence or absence of a link to a foreign state, a distinc-tion must be made between local adoption in Switzerland and intercountry adoption. The Swiss Civil Code (ZGB) recognizes three forms of local adoption, which are the joint, stepchild, and single adoption, and further distinguishes between whether the person to be adopted is a minor or an adult.

The fact sheet published provides information on the different forms of adoption, the conditions for adoption, the effects of adoption and the adoption procedure. An adoption is a demanding and long-term project. Early legal advice is advisable.
